It was and still can be extremely challenging eating out or going to social functions where there is food. I often bring my own meal that I know is safe, or research the restaurant ahead of time to be sure I can find something that fits within my restrictions. In the end it is totally worth it though. Your health is too important to take for granted.
Even if others don't believe in what you are doing, it is important to do what works for you. It really felt like I was losing part of myself, not just foods that I enjoyed, but foods that represented memories and traditions that were important to me and my family.
The beautiful thing I discovered was that you don't have to let go of your favorite recipes and traditions, you just have to take time to reinvent them. Although it can feel so overwhelming and isolating at first to be GF, by taking a little time to learn this new way of cooking and baking, you truly can create GF recipes that the whole family can enjoy and that will enable you to carry on your cherished family traditions.

I love the food and the healing I've seen, but I was not prepared for how much social interaction revolves around food. It is hard to go out with friends or visit family. I haven't eaten a meal with my in laws in 3 months because I can't trust the food they serve.
The good news is that I can always bring my own meals to things, and the food is delicious for anybody if they are willing to try it. I went cold turkey and kicked out all carbs, then started exercising a lot. For two weeks I was exhausted and head-achey. Since then I've started eating way more white potato and sweet potato, mostly when I'm exercising, and I'm all good. The first 27 years of my life had been spent eating junk and fast food. I was on a constant yo-yo diet from a very young age and addicted to Diet Coke.
For me, giving up sodas was really difficult. I was addicted to the caffeine high and drank them throughout the day just to keep my energy up.
Little did I know that I was slowly poisoning myself and destroying my bodies ability to self-regulate. I found that with the introduction of actual food instead of food like products I was able to push through the withdrawal symptoms and find real satisfaction with my diet. Lieberman actually calls the assumption that we only adapted to eat food that our ancestors usually ate "the most important problem" with Paleo eating.
One of the fundamental principles of evolution is that natural selection favors only traits that increase reproductive success, he explained, and that we adapted to be healthy insofar as health improves our ability to have more children — who survive and in turn have children, thus passing those genes down to further generations.

People lose weight on any diet that restricts calories and cuts out junk food, including the Paleo diet. Even Lieberman, who is skeptical of some Paleo philosophies, said that he's not skeptical of the healthfulness of certain aspects of Paleo eating — like it's emphasis on avoiding high-glycemic foods and pro-inflammatory fats.
But eating mainly meat, fruits, and vegetables without any bread, dairy, pasta, or even beans may not be realistic for any sustained period of time.
And cutting vitamin-rich legumes and dairy, and fiber-filled grains based on foggy logic and misinformation seems unnecessarily cruel. In other words, the imagined Paleo life is probably hard to endure today. So while the diet may be great for dramatic weight loss in the short term, such as for Bush, keeping the weight off over months or years will probably be even more difficult than surviving a junk-food-lined campaign trail and clinching the presidency.
Even Bush may have some trouble with Paleo living. As he told the New York Times , "I am always hungry. According to basically every diet researcher I have ever spoken to, the key to weight loss over the long haul is finding an eating pattern you like and can stick with. In my opinion, the yummiest "good carb" by far is the sweet potato—even Oprah loves them. But finding a go-to carb filled with fiber will make Paleo a lot easier on you and your poor stomach!
When I started to do Paleo, I logged back on as an additional way to keep an eye on my nutrition. Once I really got the hang of the diet, my meals became more filling and more satisfying. A lunch of half an avocado cut up and wrapped in slices of nitrate-free roasted turkey breast kept me full hours longer than my typical leftover-pasta lunches ever did. The thing is, I felt great, not hungry. Kirkpatrick speculates that this lack of hunger was probably a symptom of ketosis, when the body burns fat for energy instead of carbs. But I wish I had known that Paleo would take up so much of my time. This lifestyle is not for those addicted to grab-and-go foods.
On my darkest days, I wondered if the staff at my favorite Chinese carryout place were worried by my disappearance. Along those lines Group game watches at a local bar required me to pretend to be unfazed as pulled pork sandwiches, fried pickles, and beer after delicious-smelling beer crossed the table. So not wanting to be That Girl, I always went along with whatever place my dinner companions wanted, then tried to pick something from the general menu.
